How to attach a bike frame lock
To remove an old frame lock or install a new one, you’ll need the following bike maintenance tools:
A flat-blade screwdriver
An Allen key (hex key) or a socket wrench (only needed for removing an old lock)
Removing an old frame lock
You might need to remove a manufacturer-provided lock, or get rid of an old one to add your preferred frame or ring lock. If there’s already one attached, you can loosen the screws with an Allen key or socket wrench. It can then be easily removed.
Attaching a new frame lock
First, position the new lock in front of the holes in the bike frame to begin the assembly process. Make sure the holes in the lock align with those in the frame itself.
Now, place the lock washers over the holes in the lock. The washers are usually included along with your new frame lock when you buy it.
Now you can add the screws (also included when you buy the lock). Place them through the holes in the lock and screw them tight with a flat-blade screwdriver.
Finally, double-check that the lock is secure and that it can be opened and closed easily. Once you’ve checked it’s working as intended, you’re all set for your next ride!
What if there are no holes for a frame lock?
If there are no holes in your bike frame that you can use to attach the frame lock, you may need to purchase a frame lock adapter kit. Follow the instructions included with the adapter to attach it correctly to your bike.
Once the adapter is properly seated, you can mount the frame lock on it. When buying the adapter, double-check that it’s compatible with the frame lock and your bike. It’s best to buy the frame lock and adapter from the same manufacturer if possible.
If you don’t want to use an adapter, you can also drill the necessary holes into the bike yourself – regardless of whether your bike has a metal or aluminium frame. This task will require some skill, so you might want to speak to the experts at your local bike shop first. You can only mount your frame lock securely if the holes are evenly drilled, so don’t attempt this if you’re not too confident in your DIY skills!
