Biking to school for children has a lot of advantages and some of them are that it's great for adding to their exercise for the week, and that they can get the school run done a little bit quicker. However, it's important they stay safe on the route, especially as the streets can be a little busier in the morning and the journey to the front gates can be quite crowded. Here's our top tips on keeping children safe whilst they're cycling to school and what they can do to make sure their bike is ready to go!

Before You Ride

Check the bike over, make sure it's a perfect fit and all parts of the bike are working. We've previously put together a handy beginners guide to maintaining a bike, you can take a read of it here.

Important Road Safety Rules

  • Use any designated cycle paths on the journey

  • Wear a helmet!

  • Signal clearly at all times to let other road users know which way you are going.

  • Ride in a position where you can see and be seen at all times.

  • Make eye contact with other road users, especially at junctions, then you know they've seen you and understand where you're going next.

  • When riding at night always use a working white front light and red backlight, plus a red rear reflector - it's the law!

If you're cycling on paths shared by walkers, wheelchair users and horse riders:

  • Don't go too fast - it can intimidate other riders, and horses if they are every on your route.

  • Use your bell to let others know you are approaching, but don't assume they can hear or see you.

  • Give way to others and always be prepared to slow down and stop if necessary.

  • Be careful at junctions, bends or entrances and be aware of where other people are going.
