Waterproof?
Electric bikes have become increasingly popular in the UK, and we’re not surprised one bit. They offer a convenient, eco-friendly and, perhaps most importantly, cool mode of transportation. However, with the unpredictable British weather, you need to know that your bike is waterproof and ready for action.
Electric bikes do what it says on the tin - they’re powered by electricity! E-bike components like the battery and motor are, obviously, susceptible to water damage, so naturally we’re often asked if our electric bikes are waterproof.
Read on for a quick-fire guide to water-resistant e-bikes and how to look after your wheels in the great outdoors.
Do electric bikes need to be waterproof?
Exposure to water and moisture can pose a significant threat to the electrical components of an electric bike, leading to potential malfunctions, short circuits, and even safety hazards. Waterproofing measures are designed to protect these sensitive parts, ensuring the bike's reliable operation even in wet conditions.
Various waterproofing techniques are employed during the manufacturing of all Raleigh electric bikes, such as the use of water-resistant materials, sealed connectors, and protective coatings. Batteries and other parts are completely sealed so no water - whether it’s heavy rain or a splash from a puddle - can get in.
Are Raleigh e-bikes waterproof?
Raleigh bikes are rated IP65 water-resistant, which means they’re "dust tight" and protected against water sprayed from a hose for cleaning.
So with any of our e-bikes - from the Motus to the Modum - you’re all good for riding in the rain and cleaning your bike with a hose… and storing it in a dusty old attic, if you really want to.
It should be noted that water-resistance ratings for bikes are different to ‘waterproof’. Waterproof means that no damage will be caused by total submersion in water. However, we reckon that if your e-bike is sunk to the bottom of a lake, the waterproofing is probably the least of your worries, so water-resistance should be enough for most cyclists!
Riding an Electric Bike in the Rain: Precautions and Best Practices
When the weather takes a turn and the rain starts pouring, it's important for electric bike riders in the UK to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and dry. In this informative blog section, we'll explore the best practices for riding an electric bike in the rain.
First and foremost, ensure your electric bike is equipped with the proper rain gear. This includes mudguards to keep water from splashing up, as well as waterproof panniers or a basket cover to protect any cargo. Investing in a high-quality rain jacket and trousers can also make a significant difference in keeping you comfortable and dry.
It's crucial to be mindful of your speed when riding in the rain. Wet roads can be slippery, so it's best to reduce your speed and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles. Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, as these manoeuvres can be more challenging in wet conditions.
Pay close attention to the road surface and be on the lookout for potential hazards, such as puddles, debris, or manhole covers, which can be particularly treacherous when wet. Adjust your riding style accordingly, and consider taking alternative routes if the conditions become too hazardous.
Finally, remember to keep your electric bike well-maintained. Ensure the battery, motor, and other electrical components are properly sealed and protected from water exposure. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prevent any issues that may arise from riding in the rain.
